Product Review - The New "Nightforce Extreme Scope" By Buddy Clifton

Military Field Story using NXS scopes

Why we sell Nightforce scopes:

In our long-range shooting experiences, both in 1000 yard competition, and in long-range hunting and varminting, we've used a number of rifle scopes. These have included the various Leupold target scopes including the Mk 4 scope, the Unertl scopes, Mitchell and a few others. We consider the Nightforce scopes to be as good as, if not better, optically than any of these. We've actually seen .50 caliber bullet holes at 1000 yards with the 5.5 x 22 Nightforce scope, set on 22 power! This is excellent resolution.

And the Nightforce scopes hold up very well to the recoil of the bigger magnum type cartridges. As we mentioned above, even the .50 caliber BMG cartridge won't destroy a Nightforce scope as it will most others. A good percentage of the scopes we've sold over the years have been mounted on .50's and not one has failed to our knowledge.

During the hunting season of 2004 we tested the then-new Nightforce 2.5-10 NXS scope on a 7mm-08 and it performed very well in a variety of lighting and visibility conditions including snow storms - just as it was designed to do.  This is a much lighter and smaller scope than the other NXS models and is very well suited to a conventional hunting rifle.  The 1-4 NXS is an excellent choice too for applications with lower power requirements.

Our primary business is manufacturing rifle barrels. The Nightforce scopes are the only other product we sell. We recognized from the beginning that this was a quality product manufactured by a quality company and that is the reason we continue to sell the line.

Night Force policy does not allow us to export any NF product outside of the US.

Product Review - The New "Nightforce Extreme Scope"

By Buddy Clifton - President of the Fifty Caliber Shooters Association

From the 1999 #4 issue of Very High Power The official publication of the Fifty Caliber Shooters Association

The introduction of a new riflescope usually doesn't command a lot of attention. However, the new Nightforce Extreme Scope, NXS for short, is not in this category. The NXS offers features not found on any other factory scope on the market and is a scope for shooters looking for the best of the best.

Upon receiving the NXS (Nightforce Extreme Scope), I was first impressed with the packaging. I was like kid having his first Christmas. I couldn't open the package fast enough.

Looking through the scope, clarity far surpassed any riflescope I have ever looked through. Nightforce told me this is due to the vacuum lens coating process and proprietary 4-layer broadband multi-coating on all air-to-glass surfaces. This improves lens efficiency by eliminating surface reflections, improving light transmission, and image contrast. Nightforce's unique coating materials maintain tolerance limits of 0.000005" and exceed the toughest Mil-Spec abrasion test.

Magnification is variable, 5.5 to 22x, with six different reticle options. The one I received was an illuminated mil-dot reticle. The mil-dot reticle is unique, in that the posts and mil-dots are outlined so the shooter's target is not obstructed by solid side posts and solid mil-dots. The laser etched glass reticle eliminates any possibility of reticle breakage and glows red when illuminated. The reticle illumination is activated by pulling out on the parallax turret assembly, which also houses the long-life 3-volt lithium-ion battery. A rheostat is also located in the turret assembly that allows the shooter to set the intensity of the illumination. The NXS has 95 minutes of elevation adjustment and 60 minutes of windage adjustment. The windage and elevation adjustments are calibrated in true moa and graduated in 1/4 moa clicks with numbered horizontal indicator marks representing 10 moa per rotation, allowing easy return to zero. The turret knobs are ergonomically designed for easy grip and visual operation under the most demanding field conditions. Eye relief on the NXS is approximately four inches.

Jeff Huber, at Lightforce USA, informed me the NXS was designed to perform under the worst imaginable conditions. In the testing process, riflescopes are subjected to extreme environmental torture tests. The NXS is tested to 66 feet of water; frozen in a nitrogen atmosphere to -80 degrees F. and then heated to 250 degrees F. in a one-hour period, function tested at both temperature extremes. If this was not enough, the NXS is recoil and impact tested at 1200 G's for both positive and negative forces.

Buddy Clifton, current FCSA world Champion receiving his awards from Match Director Teri Burtt, as the "Top Gun" of the Regional Match at Ben Avery Range, Nov. 1996. Buddy established two (2) new world records at the match. He shot a 291 out of a possible 300 in light gun class and established a new two gun aggregate record of 12.9063 inches.

In an age where cost cutting is accomplished by using thinner and lighter materials, the NXS 30mm tube body is 2-3 times thicker than most any other riflescope. This adds to the thermal stability, which aids in maintaining a consistent zero and reduces deformation of internal components, thus improving tracking and repeatability. Weighing in at 32 oz, slightly heavier than other scopes, this increased weight directly relates to longevity and the high quality of components used.

The objective lens is a 56mm triple element lens, which provides exceptional resolution and greater light management. The optical elements are retained in a machined cell of 6061-T6 aircraft grade aluminum, then hand bedded with a proprietary Mil-Spec bedding compound and cured at 300 degrees F. for 24 hours. All lenses are then further secured by lock-rings, both front and back. This "zero tolerance" lens securing method is unique to the Nightforce riflescope line assuring no possible movement of the optical elements from impact in any direction including side impact. Surface hardened brass silicon bronze, high strength steel, and advanced dry film lubricants are predominately used in the manufacturing of the erector tube and adjustment assemblies making these core components extremely resistant to wear.

All internal metal components are anodized with a non-reflective finish and the surface anodized with a matte-black finish, which provides surface hardening and reduction of glare. Nitrogen purged and hermetically sealed to three atmospheres, the NXS is ensured of fail-safe reliability under all environmental conditions.

I was fortunate to receive the NXS just prior to the September '99 Coalinga, CA match. This allowed me to test the scope on my light, 26 pound fifty. Performance of the scope was flawless and the most unique aspect of the variable power function was being able to align the mil-dots up to the edge of the target frame guaranteeing perfect return position after each shot.

Extraordinary attention to quality, workmanship and detail given to the mechanical design and assembly is unparalleled. No wonder this scope is named Nightforce Extreme Scope, with emphasis on extreme.
