Content Trout

On Labor Day of 2005 we flew into the Schafer airstrip in Montana and took a hike down the Middle Fork of the Flathead fishing for cutthroat trout. We didn't catch a single one but did find this deep pool full of fish. If you look carefully you can see a hundred or more in the bottom of this cool pool. But they would hardly look at a spinner or a dry fly. Some appeared to be up to 20" long or so but not one of them was in the mood for what we had to offer. So, I took their picture from the bank and called that good. This was the end of another hot and dry summer and my guess is the trout were stressed and staying in the coldest water they could find eating whatever drifted by. This pool was at least 10' deep.
